MATSUE - Shimane Prefecture
Matsue (松江市) is a true castle town crossed with many canals and owns one of the twelve remaining original castles in Japan. The city is a perfect example of Japan's mix of tradition and modernity, city and nature. From the beautiful and delicious Wagashi you can taste with matcha to great local food, there are many specialities to try. Located in between two great lakes and bordering the Sea of Japan, Matsue is known as the “City of Water” and has inspired people all over history, including famous Irish writer Lafcadio Hearn, who made it its adopted home. Matsue is also famous for its sunset over Lake Shinji (having been included in Japan’s list of one hundred best sunsets), its many onsens located in the neighborhood of Tamatsukuri, and its smaller districts such as Mihonoseki, a traditional fishing village outside of time with a charming shrine dedicated to the god of the sea and commerce, Ebisu.
